The Guardian
I finally watched the movie The Guardian. I just want to say oh my. It totally got to me. I don't know how many of you have watched it but if you haven't you should. You want to know what the Coast Guard is about? Watch that movie. There are some things fancied up by Hollywood but for the most part that is what they do. And the Alaska footage was dead on. It takes a special person to do that job and I know many of them. Ok so I was feeling "Go Coast Guard" can you tell. It was hard to watch too because we were in Kodiak and I have friends that have done those missions and flown in those conditions. It kills me when parents want their kids to stay safe and stay home and go to college. More lives are lost in school shootings than in the Coast Guard in Iraq. We lose more Coasties to accidents and rescues that don't go right than we have in Iraq. But hey you keep your kid safe and we will do the heavy lifting. One parent asked if I would let my child go. I said yes, because I would be proud of my child for wanting to serve their country and do something so amazing with their life. This is more than a job, its a frame of mind and a lifestyle. Its not for everyone but that is probably why we are as good at our job as we are. Ok off my soap box now. Thanks.
